Medical Teams, Brazil

The EMAF medical teams travel along Brazil’s coastline providing medical care through boat clinics for hundreds of small fishing towns. For many the clinic is the first medical and dental services they have ever received. Through one clinic hosted on a small fishing island the physician diagnosed a young girl with a very uncommon disease that if left untreated would progressively deform her legs and feet. Having caught this, the ministry was able to take her to the city and pay for her to receive surgery to correct the problem. The specialists reported that if the treatment had been delayed any longer she would be deformed for life. In the rural areas of Brazil, individuals with debilitating diseases and deformities face extreme difficulties and often end up poor and destitute. For this little girl the boat clinic saved her from a life of suffering and provided her the opportunity to grow into a healthy adult.
